About the trek

Gangotri is considered to be a very important part of the Indian mythology as it is the origin of the holy river Ganga and one of the four auspicious Dhams. Gangotri is considered to be the place where Bhagirath worshiped Lord Shiva, pleased with his worship Lord led the Ganga flow from here.  This place is also termed as Gaumukh, which means the face of a cow owing to its physical appearance. It’s a peaceful place with a mesmerizing view of Mt Shivlang, one of the finest mountains in India.

Fitness Level

The altitudes of this trek are not very high, however its is considered to be difficult due to the glaciers along the path making it slippery.  It is recommended for trekkers to practice jogging for 4 km daily in around 30 minutes, in order to complete the trek in time without feeling breathless. Basic stretching exercises and yoga is necessary for muscle comfort and ease of movement while carrying the backpack. Non-trekkers and beginners are not recommended to fulfill their trekking desires through this one.

Day 01Rishikesh-Uttarkashi

Post breakfast we start early with a drive to Uttarkashi by private vehicles, through a narrow road amidst the Ganga and Bhagirath valley. Enroute we come across some sacred places such as the Devprayag, where a temple of Lord Ram is located and is also a junction that unites the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers at Devprayag. This place is also the home town of the famous astrologer who who established Nakshatra Vedh Shala (an observatory considered the second best in the country in the pre-independence days), late Acharya Shri Pt. Chakradhar Joshi. The observatory is well equipped with two telescopes and astrological books. The town is also considered as a learned center for ancient saints and is the home town for different sages. Uttarkashi also holds a famous temple of Lord Shiva with a unique Trident formed using eight metals or Astadhatuand is believed to be used by the Lord to kill Vakasur. Additionally there are a few more temples in the town.  All these places are explored post lunch.

Day 02Uttarkashi – Gangotri

Distance: 95 km

Today is indeed a short day with a 4 hour upward drive to Gangotri, while admiring the steel bridge of Borge at Bhairav Ghati. This place is auspicious for Hindus and is believed as the place where goddess Ganga descends from heaven to the earth. The place is filled with pine and deodar trees and surrounded by various ashrams and dharamshalas. 

Day 03Gangotri- Bhojwassa

Altitude: 3792 m

Average time taken: 5-6 Hours

Distance: 13 km

Finally we begin with the actual trekking and start with a gradual incline towards the last inhabited destination of the journey, Bhojwassa. This trek is carried alongside the rive Bhagirathi surrounded by number of different trees. On reaching the campsite, we witness the mind boggling view with a sunset through the Bhagirath peaks and enjoy our overnight stay in tents.

Day 04Bhojwassa-Gomukh-Tapovan

Altitude: 3890 – 4463 m

Average time taken: 7-8 Hours

Distance: 19 km

While enjoying the panoramic view with breakfast starts another day to the most popular spot of the journey, Gomukh, the origin of river Ganga. On reaching Gomukh is ahrd ascend toward Tapovan, owing to the slipper glacier route. Tapovan is a beautiful meadow with the bas of Mt. Shivling. In the olden time the tranquility of this place was one of the reasons for the place being preferred for meditation by saints. In these meadow we can also see herds of the local blue mountain goats called as Bharal.

Day 05Tapovan – Bhojwassa

Altitude: 3792 m

Average time taken: 5 Hours

Distance: 19 km

Our day starts late with some rest and nearby explorations and photography as the previous day was a long and steep climb. Today we start heading back with descent along the same rout we climbed up. However being a descent the time required is lesser.

Day 06Bhojwassa – Gangotri

Altitude: 3048 m

Average time taken: 5 Hours

Distance: 13 km

A slightly relaxed day with a breakfast and an astonishing view of the sun rising through the Mt. Shivlang with golden rays on the snow clad mountains. Post breakfast we climb down towards the Gangotri base camp with a dinner and overnight stay.

Day 07 Gangotri – Uttarkashi

Altitude: 3048 m

Average time taken: 5-6 Hours

Distance: 95 km

An end to our trek, we finally drive back to Uttarkashi, witness the morning Aarti of river Ganga  and visit a few asharams around.

Day 08Uttarkashi – Haridwar – Delhi

Average time taken: 7-8 Hours

Similar to the beginning of the journey we drive back to Delhi with the same route, with dinner and overnight stay at hotel in Delhi.

The next morning we are completely refreshed with one of a lifetime experience, heading back to our routines with tons of memories and scenic beauty, that will last in our hearts and mind forever. Completing this trek often gives a feeling of purity and calmness due to its spiritual atmosphere.
