About the trek

Dodital is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesh, and is the source of Assi Ganga. This lake Dodi is named after the Himalayan Trout a fish found in this lake. This trek is one of the few treks that can be performed throughout the year with its beautiful nature and climatic conditions that are not so harsh. The base village of the trek is Bhaghirathi and ups to the Dodital a perfectly surrounded lake amidst the alpine meadows. The route is also popular along the local shepherds called the Gujjars, who get their buffalos here and is also used by the pilgrims walking from the Gangotri to Yamonotri.

Fitness Level

This is one of the easy treks performed at comparatively lower altitude, however stamina to walk in cold weather is required. Hence it is recommended to practice long and brisk walk at least a month prior to the trek. It is also suggested that beginners also try other exercises and some yoga in order to breathe comfortably along the walks.

Day 01Reach Uttarkashi

Altitude: 1200 mts

Uttarkashi is known as the Kashi of North a small town in Uttarakhand, which is a 5 hour long drive from Dehradhun. On reaching the place we stay in hotels, get acclimatized to the weather and explore the surroundings. This drive takes us through the Mussoorie by pass offering scenic views of the massive Tehri Dam.

Day 02Uttarkashi- Sangam Chatti

Altitude:  4200 mts  

Average time taken: 2 hours drive

Distance: 16 kms

The journey starts after an early breakfast with a drive to Sangam Chatti, the starting point of our terk. After a two hour drive, we relax at the base camp and roam around the village ans can play with cattle. In the village we can checkout the Hydro powered atta chakki, spot some local birds and see the paddy fields. We come across the local villager of Bhevra and Aghoda, who are helpful and friendly. Through some walk we reach the campsite at Bhevra surrounded by oak trees.

Tip** Please avoid giving any food items to the local villagers.

Day 03- Bhevra to Dodital

Altitude: 3023

Average time taken: 7-8 hours

Distance: 16 Kms

The third day is a long day with a 6-7 hour walk to Dodital with halts in between. The walk was fascinating through the pine and oak trees. Around mid day we reach Manjhi and have our packed lunch, while enjoying the scenic nature. Moving ahead for around two hours we reach our destination of Dodital. Being Lord Ganesh’s birthplace we can spot a Ganesh temple and enjoy the Himalayan Trouts in the lake.

Tip** Fishing is strictly prohibited.


Day 04Day excursion from Dodital Lake to Darwa Pass top and return

Altitude: 4200 mts

Average time taken: 6 Hours

Distance: 10 kms to and fro

We start trekking early with packed breakfast and lunch in order to reach the Darwa Pass. Reacing the top takes around 3 hours and is approximately 5 kms from Dodital. Going ahead the route has two bifurcations, one that leads to Darwa Pass and the other to Bandarpunch Peak. On reaching the Darwa Pass we witness the astonishing range of Bandarpunch and Swargorohini ranges. It is also believed that this pass gives a 360 degree view of the Himalayas. After enjoying this view we trek down back to our Dodital campsite for lunch and then relax for the day.

Day 05Dodital to Bhevra

Altitude: 3023 mts

Average time taken: 6 Hours

This day starts with an early breakfast followed by a descend back to Bhevra taking the same route. This trek is a pleasant experience amidst natural beauty. During our night stay here today we enjoy the local delicacies Jhangora Ki Kheer or Gahat Rasmi Badi (Kofta).

Day 06Bhevra to Uttarkashi

Altitude: 1200 mt

Average time taken: 2 Hours drive

Distance: 16 km

Post breakfast we head to a small downhill trek and reach the roadside for a drive back to Uttarkashi, where our adventure ends with beautiful trek memories which will last forever. From Uttarkashi the drive and stay can be customized as per the tourist requirements with either stay back and drive to Dehradhun the same day or the next day.
