Bhirgu lake, is one of the most easiest treks of the Himalayas. This trek is yet another diamond in the golden crown of Himachal surrounded by alpine meadows. The entire trek takes us along unending lush green meadows surrounded by snow-clad mountains. This is a glacial lake, which is assumed to change color every week from being royal blue at times to emerald green. This lake also has mythological stories one of which is of Sage Bhigru, who meditated at this place hundreds of years ago. Whereas locals also of Kullu believe that many Gods have dipped themselves in this water making it sacred for the devotees.
Fitness level: Climatic conditions are very far from plain lands and hence adequate time should be given for acclimatization. The trek is easy, however owing to the high altitude, it is not recommended for people with breathing problems or asthma history. Basic physician consultation is recommended before the trek in case of any medical histories. At least 30 minutes of intensive cardio workout is recommended from 15 days prior to the trek.

Altitude: 10370 ft – 12566 ft

Average time taken: 5-6 Hours

Distance: 5-6 km (trek)

We start the travel, with a 2 hour-long drive after an early breakfast in Manali. The drive takes us through the alpine forests, via the Manali-Rontang pass road. The road passes through Kolang, Palchan and Kothi. On reaching Gulaba we walk in through the forest toward the open meadows for about 3-4 hrs to reach Rohlikohli. The walk is easy and pleasant at this point. On reaching our campsite we get a splendid view of the Solang Valley and Hanuman Tibba.  Rohlikohli is a scenic land used for cattle grazing by local shepherds and has gained popularity owing to the natural water source Chor Nallah.

Day 03- Rohlikohli – Bhirgu Lake

Bhirgu Lake Altitude: 14009 ft ft

Average time taken: 6-7 Hours

Distance: 10 Km

Bhigru lake is located in between two high altitude ridges and our trek starts by climbing one of these ridges. After hiking for over an hour we can see an oval glacial lake surrounded by grass or snow, depending on the season. This area is often foggy, however on clear days the wide ranges of Pir Pinjal and Dhauladhar are seen. From here the route is foggy and hence a local guide is advised. After capturing the views, we head back to our campsite at Rohlikholi.

Day 04- Rohlikholi – Gulaba – Manali
Altitude: 12566 ft – 10370 ft
Average time taken: 4-5 Hours
Distance: 5 Km (trek)
The last and the easiest bit of the trek is a descend towards Gulaba through the same meadows we came up from. The route takes around 3-4 hours to reach down to the road, where private vehicles are available to head back to Manali. Our drive back is around 1-2 hours passing through Rohtang Pass surrounded by snow-clad mountains and mesmerizing beauty.
This gets a to an end from a short and refreshing getaway filled with immensely beautiful experiences. Owing to the easy climb and less number of days, this trek is a must for all to get enthralled from the daily busy schedules.
